The Outdoor Living program primarily focuses on end-use applications such as decks, porches and other amenities. These outdoor structures are built either as part of new construction or as additions to homes that are classified in the repair and remodeling market sectors. Outdoor Living markets decks and porches built with treated lumber as natural extensions of the living area.
In 2006, NAHB reported that decks and porches accounted for approximately $3.6 billion of a total of $228 billion dollars spent in repair and remodeling. There is great potential for growing softwood lumber demand in the repair and remodeling sector by promoting decks and porches. Decks will be the major focus when promoting within the repair and remodeling market sector. The Freedonia Group estimates that 85 percent of decking demand is generated from residential repair and remodeling projects.
